TREATMENT

Hyperhidrosis

Botulinum toxin is an established and clinically recognised treatment for primary axillary hyperhidrosis, a condition characterised by excessive and uncontrolled underarm sweating. This condition can persist regardless of temperature or activity level and may significantly interfere with daily comfort, clothing choices, and quality of life. When injected into the underarm area, Botulinum toxin works by blocking the nerve signals that stimulate sweat glands, thereby reducing sweat production in the treated region. This treatment is typically considered when topical or oral therapies have proven ineffective or are not well tolerated.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Botulinum toxin is a neuromodulator used to treat primary hyperhidrosis, a condition characterised by excessive sweating that is not related to heat or exertion. The treatment works by disrupting the nerve signals responsible for activating the sweat glands.

Blocking Nerve Signals
Sweat glands are activated by acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter released by nerve endings. When Botulinum toxin is injected into the affected area, it temporarily inhibits the release of acetylcholine, thereby reducing stimulation of the eccrine sweat glands.

Reduced Sweat Production
By preventing nerve communication with sweat glands, Botulinum toxin significantly decreases sweat output in the treated area. The reduction is localised and does not affect the body’s ability to regulate temperature in untreated areas.

Duration of Effect
The effects of Botulinum toxin on sweat gland activity typically last between 3 to 6 months, after which nerve function gradually returns. The duration may vary depending on the individual and the treatment site.

Repeat Treatments
To sustain the reduction in sweating, periodic re-treatment may be required. A treatment plan will be discussed during consultation based on response and clinical need.

Botulinum toxin is a licensed medical treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis and is generally considered where topical treatments have not been effective or appropriate. Treatment is provided following clinical assessment by a qualified healthcare professional.
